Learning Resource Computer Lab

The Learning Resource Computer Lab is an open computer lab located within the Katharine L. Boyd Library. SCC students, faculty and staff may use this lab for free.This also includes GED, and Continuing Education Students. In addition students from other colleges or universities with a valid student ID from their home institution may use the computer lab.

The LRC is equipped with networked computers and printers. A variety of software is installed on each computer. All provide Internet access.

The Learning Resource Computer Lab is fully staffed with trained and knowledgeable individuals who are ready to answer questions and lend assistance.

Acceptable Use Policy 
A Summary of the College's Acceptable Use Policy

The full policy follows this summary statement. Users are expected to read both the summary and the full policy carefully. Failure to abide by this agreement may lead to disciplinary action, including loss of computer privileges, dismissal from the college, and/or criminal prosecution. We are pleased to be able to provide information technology resources at Sandhills Community College. We hope that you find these resources helpful as you pursue your studies, and we are happy that we are able to provide computers, site-licensed software, and Internet access to make these studies both comprehensive and enjoyable. We ask that you read the following policy statements and abide by them so you and other users are assured of fair and equitable access.

User Responsibilities: Information technology resources are provided for educational use. Use of these resources is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities. The college expects and requires ethical, legal, and responsible behavior of individuals using these resources. Disciplinary action will result from unauthorized, inappropriate, or illegal use of hardware, software, or Internet access. As a user, you should not:

  • access another user's files without permission;
  • access files by using false usernames, accounts, or passwords;
  • remove any college hardware, software, or data without permission;
  • copy or attempt to copy any software or data without authorization;
  • load, download, or upload any software or file without authorization;
  • distribute unauthorized software;
  • modify system configurations or hardware without authorization;
  • disrupt or attempt to disrupt system operations;
  • participate in unauthorized and time-consuming game-playing;
  • harass another user or violate another user's rights;
  • access pornography or other offensive or inappropriate material;
  • use college computer systems and/or software for personal work;
  • use college computer systems, networks, and/or software for any illegal activity;
  • connect any equipment not owned and/or authorized by the Network Administrator to the campus network except in specifically identified public access areas.

 

 

LRCL Guidelines

Guidelines for Use

  • Learning Resources Computer Lab resources, facilities, and services are available to SCC faculty and staff, students; SCC GED and continuing education students via sign in and any other college or university student via sign in with a valid student id from their home institution. Users must read, accept, and abide by the SCC Acceptable Use Policy and the LRCL Printing Policy. The LRC staff will strictly enforce the Acceptable Use Policy. Computer usage in the LRCL will be monitored at all times using SynchronEyes software.

  • Users of the LRC must sign in at the Check-in Computer using a VALID Sandhills Community College student identification card. Students enrolled at other colleges must present valid identification.

  • Priority will be given to students needing to use LRC resources for academic purposes.

  • Modifications MUST NOT be made to LRC Computers. All work must be saved to a UBS Flash Drive which can be purchased at SCC’s bookstore

  • The LRC is a quiet study area. Students are expected to respect the rights of others at all times. Cell phones may not be used in the LRC.

  • No food or drink is permitted in the LRC.

  • Children are not permitted in the LRC and they are not permitted to use the LRCL computers.

  • Computers will be started for users. Users should not attempt to turn on or reboot computers. All technical problems must be referred to LRC staff members. Users should not attempt to solve technical problems themselves.

  • The Learning Resources Computer Lab is an open computer lab operating on a first come, first served basis. Computers can not be reserved for individuals or classes.

  • Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher
  • Assorted Instructional Software

Printing Policy

Printing for academic purposes:

Research/Internet - Printing from the 'web'

  • Students must abide by all copyright laws
  • Web pages longer than two pages should be copied and pasted into a word processing program to minimize paper loss
  • Documents longer than fifteen pages must be approved by an LRC staff member

 

Homework/Research Papers

  • Students may print two copies
  • Documents longer than fifteen pages must be approved by an LRC staff member

 

Color printing:

  • Color printing is available for student academic use only
  • Color printing is $.15 per sheet, paid in advance
  • Color printing is limited to five sheets per student per assignment
  • Only LRC staff members may operate the color printer

 

Printing for non-academic purposes:

  • Printing is available at ten cents per sheet for use exceeding that listed above or for personal purposes

 

We further recommend:

  • Use of the copier located in Boyd Library for multiple copies of documents
  • Use of the "print preview" option before printing to ensure appropriate formatting

 

Scanning Policy

  • Use of the scanner is for student academic purposes only
  • Only LRC staff members may operate the scanner
  • Academic material will be scanned on to a student's disk USB flash drive or may be emailed to the student's email account
  • There is no charge for scanning
  • LRC staff members may not be able to provide scanning on demand. Students may be required to leave documents with an LRC staff member for scanning at a later time.

 

It is the goal of the LRC to maintain a facility supportive of student and faculty needs and uses. In an attempt to provide service to as many as possible, while limiting the excess of a few, the LRC staff will enforce the printing and scanning policies.
