Types of sources

Primary Sources - Immediate, First-Hand accounts of a topic from people who had a direct connection

  • Texts of laws and other original documents
  • Newspaper reports written from first-hand accounts or quotes from people who witnessed
  • Speechs, diaries, letters, and interviews
  • Original Research
  • Survey data (Census or economic statistics)
  • Photographs, video, or audio

Secondary Sources - One step removed from primary sources. They may quote or use primary sources. Secondary sources often add a "layer" of interpretation and analysis.

  • Most Books
  • Analysis or interpretation of data
  • Cite scholarly or other articles about topic (Usually from people not directly involved)
  • Documentaries (Can use photographs and videos considered primary sources)
